Ferguson Grand Jury: Nullification of Justice for Brown family

Before I comment on the Ferguson decision not to indict patrolman Darren Wilson for shooting and killing unarmed teenager Michael Brown, let me emphatically state for the record:

Wonton violent reactions are not only reprehensible they do not help advance the cause.

Burning down and looting your community, neighborhoods, homes, businesses, restaurants, shops etc. because you are angry and frustrated by justice denied is counter-productive and stupid. 

Furthermore, a vast majority of these rioters are thuggish opportunists that rarely make positive contributions to the welfare of our communities. If fact, I am fairly sure that many of the looters and rioters have committed violent black-on-black acts.

And most important, once again, this method of protest is highly ineffective.

Back to the subject at hand.

Yes! Deja vu all over again. Jury nullification of justice.

Once again a jury/ panel or body of people has sanctioned the killing or brutal abuse of  an unarmed black youth or teen (and possibly pre-teen; read: 12 year old killed by cop) by a lethally and heavily armed white male authority figure who feels threaten.

Let's marinade on that thought for a minute.

A fully mature, well trained (I hope) and empowered authority figure, packing serious WMD feels threaten by an unarmed teen or pre-teen. And in some cases these officers feel mortally threatened by any black movement, even a twitch.

Contrary to popular belief, these are not outlier events, these tragedies and miscarriages of justice occur more often than some believe:

The killing of Michael Brown by police in Ferguson, Missouri, was no anomaly: As we reported yesterday, Brown is one of at least four unarmed black men who died at the hands of police in the last month alone. There are many more cases from years past.

As Jeffrey Mittman, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union's Missouri chapter put it in a statement of condolence to Brown's family, "Unarmed African-American men are shot and killed by police at an alarming rate. This pattern must stop."

"We need not look for individual racists to say that we have a culture of policing that is really rubbing salt into longstanding racial wounds," NAACP president Cornell Williams Brooks told Mother Jones. It's a culture in which people suspected of minor crimes are met with "overwhelmingly major, often lethal, use of force," he says.  source

I personally believe, contempt more than fear is the primordial emotion that is driving this violence. Many of these officers, overwhelmingly white officers in black neighborhoods, lack bonds of trust and humanity with the community they've taken oaths to serve and protect.

Just listen to former NYC mayor -- infamous for a tenure that supported and condoned heavy handed police tactics -- Rudy Giuliani:

The former mayor of New York City argued that the real issue was “the fact that 93 percent of blacks in America are killed by other blacks. We`re talking about the exception here...I would like to see the attention paid to that, that you are paying to this and the solutions so to that.” source

And

The white police officers won’t be there if you weren`t killing each other. 70 to 75 percent of the time...  source

While there indeed are nuggets of truth in Giuliani's above quote:

• The African American community has to be more passionate in our endeavors to lower crime and violence in our neighborhoods.
• Even though FBI statistics indicate crime, murder and violence are indeed significantly lower (and steadily dropping) than the 1990's, 1980's, 1970's and in some urban metropolitan areas since the 1960's, we still have unacceptable levels of crime in African American inner city neighborhoods.

Most of his diatribe reveals the cynical belief and false equivalence shared by many far too many Americans:

"Black folks kill black folks all the time so why should they vigorously object to police violence, abuse or murder. What's the big deal? Just another dead black boy."

OK, let's ride with this logic.

Fact:

90% of  raped white women are raped by white men. White women (alarmingly 1 in 5 college girls) get raped every single day by white men -- date rape, stalking rape, fraternity gang bang rape etc. -- so why did the then mayoral candidate Rudy and NYC passionately freak out when they mistakenly believed a group of black teens committed a rape against a white women?

Shouldn't white men be just as passionate about rape when it is white-on-white rape?

Side Note: Their convictions were overturned in 2002 and NYC settled a wrongly convicted lawsuit for 40 million dollars. source

Fact:

More whites are killed by other whites than by terrorists. Over 87% of white murders are committed by other whites. So, why does the media and American communities freak out over all public violent attacks until they learn that the source is good ole home-grown domestic violence as opposed to international terrorism?

I could go on and on with this absurd, frivolous and stupid charade -- but it does nothing but deflect from the issue on hand. And the subject is how to eliminate unwarranted police murder and abuse against any innocent person or the usage of deadly force on suspects of minor offenses.
