Chicago police are questioning two 22-year-men about last week's shooting in a park that wounded 13 people, including a 3-year-old boy, local media reported Monday
.
The pair were arrested Sunday night, but no charges have been filed, the Chicago Tribune reported. Police described one man as the gunman who opened fire Thursday on a crowd watching a basketball game in Cornell Square Park, on the city's South Side. The other was "one of the individuals who participated." source
What's the difference between the actions of George Zimmerman -- shooting and killing an innocent black teenager he profiled -- and the daily gangland shootings and executions of innocent victims sometimes as young as three years old in Chicago or Any Urban City, USA?
For that matter, what is the difference between Chicago's wonton youth violence (or any urban street violence) and terrorist attacks?
Rhetorical questions aside, all the above acts are deplorable, repugnant and cowardice. They represent breakdowns in homes, neighborhoods, communities and society at large. They occur because the aggressors are able to dehumanize those considered them.
In it's most primal utterance: Us is good, Them is bad...
To the George Zimmermans, the them are black punks trying to steal from honest white folks.
To the terrorist, the them are those that do not share the same belief system or worship their deity.
To the urban youth, the them are those from a different block or those that wear a different shade of color.
When does the learning and healing come? When do we truly value the humanity in the next woman or man? As one great teacher stated:
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
― Martin Luther King Jr
